Teens think, “Oral Sex Isn’t Sex?!?!?”

You did it! You had the courage to talk to your teenager about sex, and you left the conversation feeling like you covered ALL the major points: condoms, birth control, abstinence, saying no and no means no, pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, etc,. But did you cover oral sex?!?!?!?
You see, oral sex among teens may not (technically) be viewed as “sex” and for this reason many teens are dangerously exposed to contracting sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV, herpes, syphilis, gonorrhea, and the human papillomavirus (HPV). Oh and don’t think for a second that you need to talk to your son/daughter more or less based on their gender…Nope! Both sides are equally giving and receiving. So go back in there and have another awkward “SEX TALK” with your teen about oral sex a.k.a: BJ’s, head, brain, going down, oral, downtown…you get the idea! Because oral sex is sex!

Please share your strategy and talking points. It may help someone else.

  1. This is a really good point. I was just in high school 10 years ago, and all the definitions for sex have changed already. For instance, when I was in high school ‘hooking up’- just meant ‘making out/fully clothed’ – NOW, it means full on sex. Holy cow! I can’t imagine what the ‘terms’ will be when I have a teenager- I’ll have to stay informed, so I know what these kids are talking about! Good post!
